Artist 68: Joseph Gonzalez
It's a funky illustrator with a big heart and great skills now. Joseph Gonzalez is a graphic and web designer hoping to bring his talents to bear in the fight for clean fresh water, with his T shirt label 13lisa's. Joseph has grabbed a great slice of street life in his artwork and serves it up in an original and fresh way. He combines cute and ice cool to give us clever characters with a naughty smirk and more than a hint of cheeky menace. Joseph is a busy web designer as well but its great he can find the time to illustrate and bring us his fun and slick style. His work has been really tailored to being wearable with its clean bold lines and vivid palette. It brings up elements of hip hop and skate style and gives it an overhaul creating something which looks sharp and focused but with a softer side too. Who are you:
My name is Joseph Gonzalez, I'm a graphic and web designer for the Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana. I'm also an adjunct professor at South Suburban College teaching Design courses. I'm a freelance designer under the alias Miracletwentyone and design for agencies and large to small businesses. In my spare time, I also own a t-shirt label and soon to be non-profit called13lisa's with a mission to impact the world's water crisis. I also founded and organize the INsight Design Conference, an annual conference that I put on to give back to the design community of NWI. And lastly I have a photography project called Greytown Creations that captures children at play in a unique and memorable way. Most importantly and above all else, I'm a caring husband and loving father of two young boys and a fat dog.
What do you do:
I juggle many different roles throughout the year, at times I'm a teacher, other times I'm organizing a conference and so on. As one ball drops another ball picks up and the cycle continues. I love being active in the community and finding ways to give back through art and design. I'm currently working on making an impact on the global water crisis by raising money to dig a well that will supply clean water for 500 people for 5 years through causelife.org.
How did you start:
I started drawing at an early age. Drawing is the gate-way drug to design but at the time it was unclear to me how the two would connect. I was exposed to silk screening through my fathers t-shirt business more than 25 years ago. Ever since then I've had a love for art and design. It wasn't until 2001, that I went to school for design and made it into a career.
A Personal statement about you or your work:
My artwork is a therapeutic and creative outlet for me. It helps me illustrate ideas and thoughts that I have rolling around in my head. It also allows me to keep my skills up-to-date. Personally, everything I do and create is for a purpose. A calculated purpose. From paper to computer, from projects to relationships. My time is spent doing what I love most and with great passion and drive I'm always willing to see the bigger picture.

Sandra Dieckmann and Jamie Mills: Artistic Collaboration
It's with great pleasure that we get to introduce a wonderful new collaboration feature. Here on the Rally we are always interested in the latest groups, collectives and collaborations, so its great that we can feature one of the freshest pairings out there currently.
Sandra Dieckmann and Jamie Mills both Rally veterans, have produced a beautiful series of cards entitled 'Endangered Animals'
The cards really are brilliant idea with some of the proceeds going to charity, they also give us the rare opportunity to enjoy the fusion of these two very exciting illustrators work. Both are masters of animals with a considered and delicate style and both have a great eye for colour and composition and you can see this by how slick these cards are. So without too much further ado we bring you Sandra Dieckmann and Jamie Mills and their Endangered Species series.
So, what's going down?
The production of our now very gorgeous looking 'Endangered Animals' card sets is going into it's final stages. We are super excited and can't wait for our first collaboration to launch! There will be a numbered, hand-written and signed limited number of boxes up for sale first so you might want to pre-order with either me or Mr. Jamie Mills already. Just email us or leave a comment here or there!
Last week a few of the sets traveled to Angoulême BD Festival in France with Jamie which is a big arts fair and where they were very well received and sold. We are pleased and working hard to be ready here soon!

Artist 67: Susan Burghart
It's a real privilege to feature the dynamic and exciting work of Susan Burghart. This talented illustrator and graphic designer has a plethora of wonderful clients and you can see why, with her considered lines and bold vibrant palette. She has a deft skilled touch which marks her work, especially her vector art which has a real delicacy that is difficult to achieve without making the work seem too considered or clinical. This is where she stands out as not only an incredibly versatile creative, with an incisive artistic vocabulary, but in her ease with colour and tone, that she uses boldly and confidently to maximum effect always drawing the viewer in and giving them that visual shot that makes work commercially appealing. She has mastered eye catching without being obtrusive and her way of capturing and presenting a visual Zeitgeist gives her work a relevance and snap. What do you do:
I work as an illustrator and designer.
How did you start:
Every school has "that kid who can draw." That was me! By the time I started college, I knew that graphic design and the art related field was my calling. I started out working as a web and print designer for several years. In the beginning, I worked for a public university, and our photography capabilities were limited due to budget constraints. So I had to rely a lot on illustration to spice layouts up. I also started illustrating on the side -- just using my imagination -- and that started to generate client interest in the private sector. Once I started getting commissions I decided to return to school and get my master's in illustration.
A Personal statement about you or your work:
My art is an extension of who I am. I'm sharing personal interests, concerns, memories, experiences and observations. It's my way of communicating and relating with other people and making their day just a little bit better -- be it a joke, funny story, great pair of shoes, or something stunningly beautiful. It's that moment when you see or hear something in your day and want to share it with someone else. My goal is to create work straight from the heart and constantly improve on what I already do. I aim to balance a fresh and edgy, yet nostalgic and elegant feel to my work.
