Magazine feature:Typographic Revolt by HypeForType

It's feature time now and we are lucky enough to have the wonderful HypeForType with the launch of their brand new magazine Typographic Revolt which is the latest creative effort from graphic designer Ryan Atkinson and is a real slick showcase of their Exclusive Faces work. Press Release
In an effort to bring their Exclusive Faces range to a larger audience, HypeForType approached graphic designer Ryan Atkinson to produce their first magazine release Typographic Revolt. The brief was to produce a 16 page A2 magazine with a twist. Instead of following the traditional convention, Ryan designed a quick read through A2 magazine which also doubles up as a set of 4 Exclusive Faces posters. Each page folds out to create a double sided poster perfect for your studio or home wall space. Typographic Revolt is printed as a limited litho run on 90gsm wood free paper, giving everything a premium newspaper feel which absorbs the inks to create a beautiful desaturated look and feel. Typographic Revolt is available now through Amazon.

Artist 112: Stephanie Kubo

It's feature time now, and as usual we have a great artist for you guys now with the multifaceted Stephanie Kubo, hailing from the balmy climes of California Stephanie is the the driving force behind a range of working methods and styles that gives her a diverse but cogent portfolio that has her unique brand running through it. Whether it's her exquisitely detailed line art, her carefree but striking characters or her hand drawn typography there is a real sense her work has detail at it's heart. From her use of incredibly intricate worked patterns to her characters that distil the essence of a person with well chosen subtlety she has a way of knowing where to put a line to give the most value for money. With her "head dress" series she folds in her subtle efficient characters into her intense and detailed patterns, I think the real strength is in the ability to utilise a working practice that requires such care and intensity and it almost seems like a meditative act allowing her to keep her work distinct and create in a range of ways. It's great to see an illustrator who can branch out and still keep her body of work feeling distinct yet with her own stamp. So read on to find out a little more about her.

Who are you:
My name is Stephanie Kubo and I'm an illustrator living and working in Oakland, CA.

What do you do:
I make hand drawn illustrations with lots of pattern and linework, usually with little to no digital editing. Also, more recently I make hand drawn and carved/printed non-keyable fonts.

How did you start:
When I was little I used to copy cartoon drawings (Sailor Moon was a big one). As I got older it turned into copying photos, then drawing from life. In college i couldn't decide between graphic design and illustration, but illustration won in the end and it's just been snowballing since then.

A Personal statement about you or your work:
I like to think of my work as two different animals of the same species. One is usually ink and/or limited color, dark-looking illustrations, and the other is abstract, obsessive and organic drawings. Both of these use intricate patterns and dense linework.
More recently, however, there is a quickly growing third animal; typography work. I'm looking forward to seeing how these will all work together!

Typography Rally submissions open

Hello all, the rally wouldn't be the same without some more open submission goodness for you guys to get your teeth into and your creative juices flowing. And it is with this aim that we are really happy to announce our latest rally. This three week open submission event aims to give you a chance to stretch your typographic muscles and show some of your hidden talent for the art of words. From time to time everyone experiments with text and whether you are a digital font expert or you love to cut, stick and scribble we want to get your text! As usual the usual rules apply, all rights are your own and we will publicise the hell out of all our posts do grab your pens pencils and styluses and get your funk on. As usual to keep it fresh we have some different themes throughout our three week rally. So if this takes your fancy and we hope it does please check out our submission guidelines and send us a text, don't worry it doesn't have to be new work. We are more than happy to show what you send! :)


Digital Typography: Monday 1st to Sunday 7th of August 
This is for you font meisters who engage in the dark vector arts, show off your text and your style over the first week of our Typography summer event. We can't wait to see your original fonts to keep us cool as we burn in the semi relentless, not so ruthless heat of the English summer.


Hand drawn Fonts: Monday 8th to Sunday 14th of August 
This is the place for all your hand drawn, cut out or constructed work, and we are really looking forward to seeing some really original and fun designs. So however you do it we would love to see it and don't forget to send us your links so we can shamelessly promote you!


Happy Birthday: Monday 15th to Sunday 21st of August
Whilst not technically our birthday, nevertheless we would love you to put pen to paper or pad and show us how your type does it's job. So please give us a lovely typographic birthday card, you can use any methods or media you like, simply follow our submission guidelines and have fun.

• Please state which part of the rally you would like to appear in, when submitting your entry
• Low res jpeg file please (72 dpi is good enough) as this is web quality, and my decrepit PC will die otherwise
• Don't forget to send us the links to your portfolio sites, (blog, facebook, flickr and etc) if you are sending us your product, send us a link to the pages you are selling your products.
• Send us a link to your twitter account if you have one, so I can promote you on twitter effectively.
• Please send your work to illustrationrally[at]hotmail.co.uk with the title "Typography Rally"

Artist 11: Lana Hughes

Lana Hughes' portraits are so attractive, she captures the essence of people's character and their characteristics. She combines typography and illustration to make bold eye catching images. The quality and fun shows in everything she does.

Who are you:
Hi there, I am Lana Hughes, I am an Illustrator and typographer, and an all round fan of cats, beards, tea and toast!

What do you do:
I like to draw many things, the work I do typically consists of portraiture, animals and pattern, although I enjoy drawing just about anything really! Much of my work begins with hand drawing, scanning and then editing using Adobe Illustrator. I am very interested in the mixture of hand drawn and digital in Illustration.

How did you start:
The drawing began as a child..which later progressed into a hobby...which later led to a rather sizeable collection of paper and thousands of pens and pencils, then I knew I had to keep going as I was having so much fun! I then went to University gaining a BA (Hons) in Graphic Communication, Image Rich studies meaning I then got to draw all the time! I am now a freelance Illustrator whilst I eat all this toast and tea I speak of.

A Personal statement about you or your work:
I enjoy people watching, deep sea documentaries and patterns in nature, in which I take inspiration from to use in my Illustrations.

Ian Caulkett is our third featuring artist on our blog and has contributed "I" for Alphabet rally and his European countries submission is coming soon. As well as being fantastically versatile artist and graphic designer, he is commited to the illustration community and to me personally as my graduate mentor, all round nice guy, enjoy his interview.:)

Who are you:
Ian Caulkett

What do you do:
Im a designer & illustrator. I work as a creative at a small advertising agency, but also split my time working with Tiptoe, an illustration collective i set up with friends and fellow illustrators Mark Whittle and James Nicholls.

How did you start:
As long as i can remember i have been inspired by creativity, it was always the only path i was going to take in life. I graduated in 2006, and have been working professionally in various roles ever since. I feel privileged to be able to wake up everyday and do what i love for a living.

A Personal statement about you or your work:
My work is best described as mixed media collage, largely based on language and type, drawing from many contemporary designers as well as American pop artists. A passion for records led to some of my biggest influences in Peter Saville, Peter Blake & Stanley Donwood.
