Upstairs for Thinking, Downstairs for Dancing Review

Return of the Chip! Hello everyone, the sharp eyed among you will recognise the ice cool style of one of the best BW illustrators on the scene and realise that this is the first solo show of the fantastic Mr Millerchip. With some awesome eye popping work Mr Millerchip really hands it to the viewer with an experience that just pops with flavour and quirky sardonic style. Mr Millerchip is a great live artist and he backs this up with some serious chops in this, his first solo show by proving he is a real force to be reckoned with. Shows are great, but they are so much better with an atmosphere and tactile element. The whole show works really hard both aesthetically and also as a method for bringing the viewer into a crafted world. The kind of deliciously sweet satisfying props that a thousand trendy bars would kill for and a use of space that would make a trendy boutique cry with envy. Millerchip is the whole package and it's great to see his stand alone show providing such a good platform for him. Guaranteed to be a real star of the future Millerchip will be bringing you BW illos with a real grace and poise. An ace exhibition at the Pure Gallery it runs till the end of the month so if you're quick you can still get down there.

The Pure Gallery proudly presents
"UPSTAIRS FOR THINKING, DOWNSTAIRS FOR DANCING"
collection of images created by Mister Millerchip

The UK based Illustrator has created a world of characters who appear within complex narratives, living out their lives in two tone splendour.

Mr. M's first solo show “ Upstairs for Thinking, Downstairs for Dancing” depicts an oddly mundane 24 hour period in the life of Lars Arraday, a determined street preacher by day and a successful ballroom dancer by night.

Black and white could not be any clearer which is perhaps the irony of the show through a simplistic yet sympathetic approach to his chosen palette, Mr M has indeed made a success out of creating thought provoking imagery that conveys a story of one mans obsessive desires.

The show runs from the 1st to the 29th of September 2011 with a special view on Thursday the 1st of September 7pm till 10pm. Check below for the address and you can see the facebook page here!

Retrospective: Paint it! Make it!

Well I'm almost sad to write this as it means all the cakes have been eaten, the origami folded and the live drawing has met the fate of the vast majority of its ephemeral brothers. Though saying that it, the whole day was an epic win for the rally and our appeal netting us a massive £300.16 pounds, on a day when the tube was down Glastonbury was on, and the whole world was conspiring to keep us out of London!

Preparation time...
So the train broke down on the way, the weatherman lied to us through his teeth but we made it and turned up to find the most beautiful sight of hard working friends and artists coming together to put on a kick ass event. The book club probably has never been subjected to so much colour and verve, what with stunning kimonos and yukatas, zine binding, our origami zoo, hundreds of pen, papers and crafty bits, two massive cardboard trees, portraits, cakes and not forgetting the awesome live drawing by Messrs Millerchip, Jones, Fiddle and Chan.(which would be literally the best name for a law firm in history)

Cakes!
Prizes from ToDryFor, No Guts No Glory and Kuretake UK!
Shop!
Beautiful Emma Block and Kim Roberts in Yukatas!
The event kicked of with absconding temporary DJ who set up the sound and simultaneously startled pigeons as far as Toxteth. Some light furniture moving, unpacking wrapping, cutting, sticking, glueing, taping, re-taping later the scene was set with epic paper chains and bunting, more balloons than you could shake a stick at and possibly the best craft area in the history of creation. Well at least Shoreditch anyway.

The whole event flew by as we drew in and tempted friends and ordinary slightly worried londoners into our den and gave what could only be described as an old school kids party meets high end art event. Many a cake was sold, portrait painted and kimono donned. and in the end there was the raffle, which I personally fixed... Well as it turned out lucky and tiny seems to go hand in hand, with our diminutive first winner taking not only the first signed towel but Millerchip's ticket, and his shirt (raffle prize, not his actual shirt!)

Origami workshop by Erica Sharp and Kuretake UK pen trial!
Zine making workshop by Lea Wade!
Live portrait drawing by Jenny Robins and June Sees!
Live drawing in morning!
Completed live drawing by Mr Millerchip, Kristian Jones, Seb Burnett and Stephen Chan!
So a massive thanks to all those who came and to all those who helped out tirelessly, giving us the first of what we hope will be many Illustration Rally live art events!

We have some fantastic pictures both here and on our flickr page, so please check them out. So till the next time we invade London with a cheeky swagger and a bag full of pens, we couldn't have done it without you!

Live drawing artist feature: Mr Millerchip

We have a feature now on the fantastic Mr Millerchip who will be gracing us with his magic pens at our upcoming Paint it! Make it! The dynamic live artist brings us some cool stylings with a mix of low brow art and graffiti culture, using his iconic characters that really draw you in and take you into his world. There is something both edgy and comforting about his work , it gives you that warm glow of skate and alt. culture with that elite slickness of a well established illustrator. Live drawing is that great mix of curiosity and involvement, where at once you are part of the scene, passively watching but at the same time you know that something magical is being created and you are witness to an ever changing phenomenon. Surrounded by art and pens, watching the work unfold is great, as the viewer and the illustrator have an unseen back and forth where influence flows both ways.

Live drawing is the bleeding edge of illustration and is one of the big influencers in shaping the modern game. If illustration is undergoing a renaissance then live drawing would be step ladder Michelangelo used to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It's a tool but more than that it's the leg up to a culture of creation, which will drive illustration forwards in new and unexpected ways.

Joel is one of these pioneers, blazing an epic inky trail through the heart of the urban environment, leaving dry pens like spent cartridges in the epic war against the mundane. Live drawing is just that, alive, fun and social, its drawing but inclusive.

Like the Web 2.0 of illustration, live drawing mashes all your worlds together. It's simple, you just have to be there...

Who are you:
Joel Millerchip I'm a black and white illustrator based in Suffolk who visually communicates briefs by using curly haired characters, social situations, and story telling.

By noting down unusual and mundane aspects of life I have books and boxes brimming with stories and visual recordings that I use to to inspire illustrations for any briefs.

What is it about live drawing that gets you going:
the challenge of problem solving when people are watching and the social aspect of it.

What are your thoughts about the event:
Stupidly excited about the collaboration with Kristian, catching up with a few chums ( i believe Stephen Chan owes me a brew? ), and hopefully help to raise a few pennies for a good cause.

A personal statement about you and your work:
work: I have a very obsessive approach to illustration, I carry note books and sketchbooks with me at all times to create a catalogue of stories and people, which are hidden away until the right commission comes a long.

From doodles of Crispin based characters to notes on absurd conversations, all is documented to help create ideas for comerical briefs.
