Live drawing artist feature: Kristian Jones

It's another fantastic artist here on the Rally for you now, Kristian Jones one of the live artists for our inaugural event Paint it! Make it! Kristian will be showing off his amazing skills on Saturday so come down and check him out. With work like this you can't help yourselves to a slice of art pie. Kristian has a delicate touch. That is not to say his work is in any way light, it's more to say that his work is deftly and carefully executed. He has a great eye for composition and detail, providing the viewer with a visual feast from a few basic fundamental ingredients. Skill, style and artistry all combine to give that rich developed feeling from pared down and concise practice. His work has that meaty feel of something with a flow and a meaning. Each image drips with stories waiting to unfold. I truly appreciate the sense of suspense that his work generates. To observe his work is to be in a state of transition, almost as if, were you to look away the whole scene would play out until frozen by your observation, much like the Schroedinger's cat of illustration, to measure it is to destroy it. So instead just soak it in. Well worth your eye time and in the full knowledge of successes to come it's Kristian Jones.

Who are you:
Kristian Jones an aspiring artist / illustrator living in Birmingham creating weird and wonderful drawings from inside my head. What is it about live drawing that gets you going: In this case the chance to collaborate with an awesome illustrator! In general the freedom to cover large areas with lots of your work, without getting into trouble with the council.

What are your thoughts about the event:
Very excited! I think its a really well crafted event with some really great artists involved, that is all for a great great cause. If it weren't for Japanese art and culture I would probably never picked up a pen.

Bio:
Kristian Jones is a freelance illustrator / artist living in the centre of the UK just outside of sunny Birmingham, producing work for magazines, clothing ranges and working for various bands and clubnights on the Birmingham music scene crafting posters and artwork of an alternative nature. His style preys on the innocence of childhood imagination, surreal worlds and fictional creatures, addled by fast food and modern culture.

Live drawing artist feature: Mr Millerchip

We have a feature now on the fantastic Mr Millerchip who will be gracing us with his magic pens at our upcoming Paint it! Make it! The dynamic live artist brings us some cool stylings with a mix of low brow art and graffiti culture, using his iconic characters that really draw you in and take you into his world. There is something both edgy and comforting about his work , it gives you that warm glow of skate and alt. culture with that elite slickness of a well established illustrator. Live drawing is that great mix of curiosity and involvement, where at once you are part of the scene, passively watching but at the same time you know that something magical is being created and you are witness to an ever changing phenomenon. Surrounded by art and pens, watching the work unfold is great, as the viewer and the illustrator have an unseen back and forth where influence flows both ways.

Live drawing is the bleeding edge of illustration and is one of the big influencers in shaping the modern game. If illustration is undergoing a renaissance then live drawing would be step ladder Michelangelo used to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It's a tool but more than that it's the leg up to a culture of creation, which will drive illustration forwards in new and unexpected ways.

Joel is one of these pioneers, blazing an epic inky trail through the heart of the urban environment, leaving dry pens like spent cartridges in the epic war against the mundane. Live drawing is just that, alive, fun and social, its drawing but inclusive.

Like the Web 2.0 of illustration, live drawing mashes all your worlds together. It's simple, you just have to be there...

Who are you:
Joel Millerchip I'm a black and white illustrator based in Suffolk who visually communicates briefs by using curly haired characters, social situations, and story telling.

By noting down unusual and mundane aspects of life I have books and boxes brimming with stories and visual recordings that I use to to inspire illustrations for any briefs.

What is it about live drawing that gets you going:
the challenge of problem solving when people are watching and the social aspect of it.

What are your thoughts about the event:
Stupidly excited about the collaboration with Kristian, catching up with a few chums ( i believe Stephen Chan owes me a brew? ), and hopefully help to raise a few pennies for a good cause.

A personal statement about you and your work:
work: I have a very obsessive approach to illustration, I carry note books and sketchbooks with me at all times to create a catalogue of stories and people, which are hidden away until the right commission comes a long.

From doodles of Crispin based characters to notes on absurd conversations, all is documented to help create ideas for comerical briefs.

Live Drawing Retrospective: Ballad Of at Jaguar Shoes

Remember the days before the icy snows set in? We do! Its a brief retrospective here of a rainy evening in deepest, darkest Shoreditch where only the pointy of shoe and quiffed of hair dare to tread. The warm friendly atmosphere, in the otherwise too cool for school Jaguar shoes was met with great appreciation and some Posca mashup action. Hard at work behind a barrier of sofas and well dressed people, the illustrators created a great piece of ephemera, there for only one night the work of some great IR regulars was themed around the phrase "don't forget to write" and formed a great backdrop to some awesome partying.

This new group is looking for more opportunities to bring their brand of live drawing goodness to a wall near you, so if you can think of any places we can be please get in touch with any of the members!

That was Ballad Of at Jaguar Shoes
